How to Make a Baked Potato on the Grill

Step-by-Step Guide to Making a Baked Potato on the Grill:

1. Gather Your Ingredients:

  • Large russet potatoes (as many as you need)

  • Olive oil or melted butter

  • Salt and pepper (to taste)

  • Aluminum foil

  • Optional toppings: sour cream, cheese, bacon, chives, etc.

2. Preheat the Grill:

  • Preheat your grill to medium-high heat (about 400°F/200°C).

3. Prepare the Potatoes:

  • Scrub the potatoes thoroughly under cold water to remove any dirt. Pat them dry with a towel.

  • Poke the potatoes several times with a fork to allow steam to escape during cooking.

4. Season the Potatoes:

  • Rub each potato with olive oil or melted butter to coat the skin evenly. This will help the skin crisp up on the grill.

  • Sprinkle the potatoes with salt and pepper, making sure to cover all sides.

5. Wrap in Aluminum Foil:

  • Wrap each potato individually in aluminum foil, making sure they are fully covered. This will help trap moisture, allowing the potatoes to cook evenly and become tender.

6. Grill the Potatoes:

  • Place the wrapped potatoes directly on the grill grates.

  • Close the lid and cook for 45-60 minutes, depending on the size of the potatoes.

  • Turn the potatoes occasionally with tongs to ensure they cook evenly on all sides.

7. Check for Doneness:

  • After about 45 minutes, check if the potatoes are done by carefully unwrapping one and inserting a fork or skewer into the center. The fork should slide in easily, indicating that the potato is fully cooked.

  • If the potato is still firm, rewrap it and continue grilling for another 10-15 minutes.

8. Optional: Crisp the Skin:

  • If you prefer crispier skin, remove the foil in the last 5-10 minutes of grilling. Place the potatoes directly on the grill and turn them occasionally to crisp up the skin.

9. Serve the Potatoes:

  • Once the potatoes are done, remove them from the grill and carefully unwrap the foil.

  • Cut a slit down the middle of each potato and fluff the insides with a fork.

10. Add Toppings and Enjoy:

  • Serve the baked potatoes with your favorite toppings, such as butter, sour cream, cheese, bacon, chives, or anything else you like.

Tips:

  • Grill Time: The size of the potatoes will determine cooking time. Larger potatoes may take closer to 60 minutes, while smaller ones can be done in 45 minutes.

  • Charcoal vs. Gas Grill: If using a charcoal grill, place the potatoes around the edge of the coals for indirect heat. For a gas grill, cook with the lid closed for even heat.

  • Extra Flavors: You can add garlic, herbs, or even Parmesan cheese to the olive oil for extra flavor before grilling.
